EyesWideOpen writes "The Justice Department filed a lawsuit to block a merger between EchoStar Communications and Hughes Electronics that would have created the nation's largest pay-television service, stating that 'This merger would give EchoStar control of the skies for the provision of video programming by satellite, leaving customers to suffer from the resulting reduction of competition'. The FCC had already voted unanimously to oppose the merger because it would create a monopoly that would have 'adverse' effects for consumers."

Flaw leaves Windows open to DOS attack, Microsoft warns - Computerworld - A flaw in software code that implements a protocol for virtual private networks (VPN) makes Windows 2000 and Windows XP systems vulnerable to denial-of-service attacks, Microsoft Corp. warned late yesterday.
An unchecked buffer exists in the code that implements the Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP), which enables users to create and use VPNs and is natively supported by Windows 2000 and Windows XP, Microsoft said in a security bulletin. The software maker called the problem "critical."

Long-awaited Microsoft decision due out tomorrow afternoon - Computerworld - The federal judge overseeing a remedy in the Microsoft Corp. antitrust case will issue her opinion late tomorrow [Friday, 11/01/02] afternoon, the court said today.
U.S. District Court Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly gave no hint during the remedy hearing this spring how she might rule.
Although tomorrow's decision probably won't be the end of the Microsoft case, it will be one of its more dramatic turning points in a landmark antitrust case that began in the fall of 1998.
