Orbitz: Oracle to blame for site outage. The travel Web site was down for nearly 24 hours because of a problem with an Oracle database. [Computerworld News]

A new twist on viral marketing - Users who visit the site and view a video clip begin sending the e-mail invitation to their friends. The site achieves this because the video clip is not downloaded directly, but instead an ActiveX control is launched which not only displays the video, but also downloads and additional software component named "Internet Optimizer" onto the computer, which sends the e-mails.  [Ars Technica]

Oh, a EULA proceeds the installation of the "internet optimizer" and includes a provision allowing this variety of scum to use a persons contact list to send emails about the site.

According to Microsoft bulletin MS03-026, the flaw is in the way the remote procedure call used by Windows incorrectly handles messages sent over TCP/IP. It creates the potential for a buffer overflow. If successful, an attacker could take any action on a victimized system, including destroying data or running any application.

Yahoo! News - Travel Reservation Web Site Orbitz Crashes - The site, which is owned by major airlines and has expanded aggressively into hotel reservations, quit working around 6 a.m. EDT on Wednesday and was still down in the evening due to a problem with Oracle Corp.(Nasdaq:ORCL - news) database software, Orbitz spokeswoman Carol Jouzaitis told Reuters.

Orbitz was back online by Thursday AM (7/17/03).
